Frequently Asked Questions

Lets try to answer some of your most frequently asked questions

How do I clean the inside of my hot water urn?

Most hot water urns collect water born particles on the inside surfaces of the urn, which can have an effect on the taste as well as being harmful to the heating element and outlet faucet operation. To dissolve these particles and clean the urn satisfactorily fill the urn with cold water and use a tablespoon full of Crown Urn Cleaner or cut a lemon in quarters and boil the contents for an hour or so until the inside surface is clean, rinse out, fill with cold water, turn your urn on, let it heat to boiling, set the temperature to 95° to be ready to use again.

How much water do I add to the food steamer during operation?

Fill to below the basket so the food is not sitting in the water, it is preferable to add hot water to the steamer while in operation.

How much water should be used in bottom of the Food & Soup Kettles?

Fill to the fill line or until touching the bottom of the insert bowl.

Do I need to replace the whole tap assembly on my urn or boiling water unit?

You do not always have to replace the whole tap if something is wrong with the tap. We can supply a tap insert assembly which replaces all the plastic parts, spring and cup seal, the part number is HU034R (Red) - for boiling water units or HU034B (Black) - for urns. (See our list of Spare Parts). All you have to do is remove the water, unscrew the top nut below the tap handle, take out the old insert and screw in the new insert, water test and use.

How do I replace a broken water level tube on my urn?

First unscrew the broken off threaded piece inside the square elbow with a small bladed screw driver pushed into the plastic and turn in an anticlockwise direction until the broken piece comes out completely. Fit the new water level tube with the top end into the top bracket first then screw the threaded end into the square elbow in a clockwise direction until it won't go any further inside. Test with water for leaks, if OK your urn is ready to use again.
